Put Air in Your Tires (Part One)

Tires provide two functions. First and most obvious is traction. We have a myriad of tread patterns. If you are a roadie you want as much rubber on the road as possible. Most roadies choose a slick or nearly slick tire. A slick tire is best for dry clean road conditions. If you are riding on a wet surface you may want an all condition tire which will have a more pronounced tread pattern.

Mountain bikers need a more aggressive tire. Just like on the road you need to keep in mind the conditions in which you will ride. In general smaller knobs are for a dry hard packed trail. Larger knobs are for loose or muddy trail conditions. With this in mind, don’t ride on muddy trails! It accelerates erosion and makes for a bad ride for the guys who ride the trail after you.
