Wow!

Superb event at Abele’s Field on Saturday. I would like to thank the 57 riders who signed up to ride. We had some terrific training for the 25th of January. Great job by everyone who showed up.

The weather was pretty good for January - overcast, very windy, but temperatures stayed in the mid forties for most of the day. We started as a group at 10 am. Roger Harrison and Joe Porter set up a great sound system. We began with the National Anthem. We then had a parade lap to the Indiana University Fight Song (in the tradition of the movie “Breaking Away”) Then the riders were off. We had a variety of riders. From 8 to 70 years old. Road racers, triathletes, mountain bikers, folks riding hybrids with tennis shoes. A peleton developed in the two inside lanes. Riders like Mark Ramsden and Carl Fischer set out to break all records in terms of individual track miles in six hours. They formed the nucleus of a fast group that cruised the track for six hours. Teams of three riders relayed for 30 minute splits, four lap splits, two hour splits, or whatever rotation they wanted. Riders tried to stay warm when they were not on the track. Local merchants donated cookies, soups, pizza, and coffee. A long sleeve t-shirt was awarded to everyone who preregistered.

Roger Harrison kept us all motivated with great music and commentary. Roger and James Castle photographed the event. Riders were all smiles as they reported their mileage throughout the day. Paula Cole, Bill Cole, Janet Dye, Daniel Sheehan, Barb Sheehan and many others volunteered. Paula was instrumental in all phases of this operation. She planned the entire event. She coordinated with all our sponsors. She worked to build all the awards. She organized registration. Great job Paula!

Thanks to all our sponsors: Especially - KAAZ Construction that allowed us to use the track, Sis Sweets for all the cookies, Mr. Goodcents Subs and Pasta for the soup, Dominos Pizza for all the pizza.

At the end of six hours, we all returned to Santa Fe Trails to conduct the award ceremony. We were fortunate to have quite a few door prizes from Specialized for the crowd. With hot and cold drinks, and prizes we had a fun awards ceremony. The amount of dollars raised was a record - $2200! Each winning team was awarded trophies, while each winning individual was awarded medals.
