Team Meeting

We have decided to have a team meeting on Thursday, October 23rd at 6:30 PM at Ten Penny Restaurant on Cherokee Street in Leavenworth.

We will have some really cool door prizes.

We will discuss the team schedule for 2015.

We will particularly decide on the focus for our team.

Criterium? In the past we have focused on the Spring Fling Criterium Series as our team sponsored races.

Road? There are local road races which occur simultaneously.

Gravel? Several of our racers have done some gravel events. They are fun, but require a focused preparation.

There will also be a brief class on race preparation.

Spouses are welcome!

Shifting Gears

Shifting gears: Frequently at Santa Fe Trails Bicycle Shop we encounter customers who have difficulty shifting gears. Sometimes this is a result of improper derailleur adjustment, crashes, and bikes falling down. However, frequently these problems occur due to improper shifting. This is such a prevalent issue that nearly every bicycle manufacturer includes at least a paragraph on shifting in their owner’s manual.

Here are a few simple rules to make your shifting more effective: 1. Shift before you need to. When approaching a difficult climb, try shifting to the small chain-ring before you start climbing. This does two things a. you don’t lose momentum halfway up the climb by changing 16 teeth at once, and b. you don’t throw the chain off the inside chain-ring. 2. Don’t ride in a full cross. If you are in the large chain-ring, you should avoid the largest cog on the back. Large chain-rings are like overdrive they are intended to be used when the bike is moving fast. Again, shift down to the small ring first and then adjust the gears in the back to achieve a comfortable cadence. 3. When you shift the front derailleur, we recommend “glass pedaling”. In other words try not to apply maximum force when shifting from chain-ring to chain-ring.

19 Aug Race Results

Life Balance Sports 10 KM Time trial went well last Thursday. Francis Sheehan, Gene Lamb, and Brendan Sheehan raced. Big thanks to Roger Harrison for working the turn around. Roger made it a point to attend the race to ensure our riders safety. Great race, great course and great support!

Great ride Saturday. 50 miles with Aaron Rodgers, Barb Sheehan, Brendan Sheehan, and Mike Polson. Average speed was ….16 mph as promised. Hotter than Hell Hundred is next Saturday!

Sunday we hosted our first gravel ride. Check Garmin connect for “Can U ride 55 Gravel” “U can ride 31 Gravel”. Both these rides can be downloaded onto your Garmin. We met at the Sports Field at 20th and Ottawa Streets at 8 AM. There is a store in Potter (about 34 miles) where you can buy Gatorade and snacks. Four riders turned out .Mark Ramsden, Colin Guy, Matt Morgan and Brendan Sheehan. These rides are incredible! I have lived in Leavenworth for twenty years and never seen these roads. Some of the gravel roads were smoother than typical Leavenworth chip and seal. Also some great climbing awaited us.
