To me this seems obvious. Mechanical things don’t like dirt. We use our bikes outside in the elements and they get dirty. It looks cool to have a little dirt on your bike – It proves you DO ride your bike.
The fact is cleaning your bike reduces pre-mature wear on components. Your bikes drive train is exposed to ALL the road and trail grime you ride through. This grime sticks to chains, cogs, chain wheels, brake pads, and rims. With this grime being ground against these components it accelerates wear and interferes with shifting and braking. Like I said…seems obvious.
One other reason is in the emotional realm. Riding a clean bike feels great! Ya, one of the rare times we talk about feelings. Similar to washing you car or anything you value, you appreciate it more when it’s clean. Speaking of value, how much did you pay for those Levi’s? And you wash them after every use. How much did you spend on you bike? Just a thought.
